Course Description

The purpose of the program is to comprehensively examine the legal ramifications of patient documentation. This course will provide insight on strategies to help ensure that your documentation is effective and legally defensible. Specific content that will be discussed includes: key sources of litigation for healthcare professionals, how medical records are interpreted/analyzed, how to document difficult situations, charting by exception and the pros and cons of electronic doc-umentation.

Program Learning Outcomes

This program prepares the learner to:

· State the most common source of litigation for healthcare professionals.

· Identify common pitfalls in nursing documentation.

· Describe the essential components of a complete and accurate nurse’s note.

· Discuss strategies for writing legally defensible notes.

· Discuss how to document high-risk conversations and situations.

· Examine legal implications of electronic documentation.

· Analyze actual cases in terms of documentation and deviations from the standard of care.

Pam Collins, MSN, CMSRN, RN-BC Related Seminars and Products


Pam has more than 35 years of varied nursing experience. She has worked as a staff/charge nurse for medical-surgical and pediatric units. Her experience also includes nurse management, nursing administration, nursing education and consulting. While Pam currently works as an independent consultant, she maintains her skills by working as a clinical educator for medical-surgical and specialty surgery at an acute care facility in Charlotte, NC. Pam is dually certified in medical-surgical nursing from the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Additionally, she has partnered with various nursing schools to assist nursing students in their preparation for the NCLEX Exam.

Pam speaks nationally on clinical and legal topics for the healthcare professional. Her passion is evidenced by her energy, presentation style and ability to engage the audience. She was awarded the 2013 South Carolina Educator of the Year Award by the South Carolina AHEC Consortium and considers it a privilege to share her expertise.

The Day Of

Sign-in begins at 7:30 am. The day includes a one-hour lunch (on your own), as well as a morning and afternoon break of 15 minutes each. The order of lectures presented and break times may vary according to speaker preference.
