Albert Ellis, PhD

Albert Ellis, PhD, was an American psychologist and psychotherapist best known for developing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, an active, cognitive-behavioral approach to psychotherapy introduced in the 1950s. He earned his MA and PhD in clinical psychology from Columbia University and was certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology. Ellis founded the New York–based Albert Ellis Institute, where he taught, practiced, and developed REBT for decades. He is widely regarded as one of the originators of the cognitive shift in psychotherapy and a major early figure in cognitive-behavioral therapy. His many books and public teachings helped bring cognitive and rational-emotive methods to clinicians and general audiences.
